This sacred institution was established as per the wish of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. It aims at imparting education based on Indian culture, which includes human values, and moulding the students as good citizens of this glorious Bharath. Along with modern education like computer, moral and spiritual education based on the five fundamental universal human values; Sathya, Dharma, Shanthi, Prema and Ahimsa are imparted. It inculcates the noble values such as love and respect for elders, faith in fatherhood of God and brotherhood of man, discipline , patriotism, selfless service, leadership quality etc. The main purpose of this institution is to educate the students according to the ancient Gurukula System of Education.
It was in the year 1961 that a few people had visited Prashanthi Nilayam from Chokkady to see Shri Sathya Sai Baba. After talking to him and watching some miracles, they believed him to be “God” and returned back. Slowly and steadily the devotees from Chokkady started increasing going to Prashanthi Nilayam. With Bhagavan’s blessings and guidance, “Shri Sathya Sai Seva Vrinda” was founded at Chokkady in the year 1963. In the year 1966, as per Bhagavan’s command, “PRASHANTHI DHARMOTSAVA” was conducted. Bhagavan had sent late Shri .Na. Kasturi to inaugurate it. In the year 1968 ,with the divine blessings and guidance of Bhagavan, a registered body was formed namely – Shri Sathya sai Seva Samithi (R), Chokkady. It was for the first time in the world that a group of 22 devotees from Chokkady conducted “Prashanthi Padayathra” a pilgrimage covering 430 km by walk. Bhagavan again sent late Shri . Na . Kasturi to innogarate “Rudrayaga & Akhanda Nama Sankirthana Sapthaha” for seven days at Chokkady.
On January 30th 1979, Bhagavan Baba set His Divine Lotus feet on the sacred soil of Chokkady and laid the foundation stone for Shri Sai Mandir by materializing “SWARNA VATAPATHRAM.” A sign of growing. Here, we like to remember SWAMI’S WORDS – by seeing the empty hill region at Chokkady, Col. Joga Rao who came along with Bhagawan, had a Question to Bhagawan—What is going to happen here? It is a bare hill surrounded by forest ! Bhagawan smiled and replied – It is going to become a great center. One day everybody’s finger at the tip of the nose will wonder – how could this place has become so great!!!
When the devotees of Chokkady and Dakshina Kannada went to Prashanthi Nilayam on pilgrimage in 1985, Bhagawan materialized “Shivalingam” and blessed the devotees of Chokkady which is to be installed at the SAI mandir. The devotees of Chokkady, constructed a beautiful SAI Mandir by themselves working day and night. It is here in this mandir that the pooja for the Shivalingam, prayer sessions and bhajans are observed.
The Sai devotees of Chokkady had been undertaking many social activities like approach roads in the local village, Digging of the wells for providing drinking water, construction of dwelling houses, construction of bus shelters etc. Regularly, bhajans are conducted in every Sai members house once a month. The Samithi is covering an area of 25 km radius. “Shivalingabhishekam” is performed every Sunday in the SAI Mandir and Prasadam is distributed to all the devotees and inmates of the campus.
Sri Sathya sai Vidya Kendra Chokkady is run under the Divine guidance and blessings of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. In 1988 with the Divine Blessings and guidance of Baba, we started a Primary School near the Mandir. Subsequently the Higher Primary school was started and followed by the High School section in 1998. The Lower Primary School up to V is run in Kannada medium and the medium of instruction of Higher Primary and High School is in English. Now the school is well equipped with School building, hostel building, computer lab, science laboratory, library, play ground, water supply, STD booth and service center, etc. This institution is run by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Trust, Chokkady.
The devotees of chokkady strongly feel the presence of Bhagavan in every action that is taken for the good of the Institution. Bhagavan has graciously granted us the unique opportunity of doing HIS Seva through this institution.
